Spelling

Charlie is seven and first grade. Things are coming together for him in the reading and spelling department, and it makes me equal parts relieved and proud. That said, he's still settling into the structure of first grade. This school thing is real, y'all.

Me, after school: "Alright, Charlie, we just have to practice for your spelling test and then you are finished with homework."

"No, mom. I did my spelling test last week. That's over, remember?"

He looked a bit crestfallen when I told him there would be weekly spelling tests, so I opted not to tell him that weekly spelling tests will be a part of his life for the foreseeable future.

He must not have been too shook up, though, because on the way home from soccer practice he declared, "I know how to spell Chicago, mom. Want to hear?" He then proceeded to sound out every single syllable in the most adorable, painstaking fashion.

"S-H-E-K-O-W-G-O ... .... .... and an 'E' at the end! Chicago! Is that right?"

Yep. Shekowgoe it is.
